Eric Cutler stars in Mozart’s ‘Idomeneo’ at the Teatro Real de Madrid

Eric Cutler returns to the Teatro Real de Madrid to sing the title role of Mozart’s Idomeneo this month. Filled with dramaturgical and musical power, this work about the king of Crete departs from its original setting of post-Trojan War ancient Greece to a modern interpretation. Robert Carsen directs this new production featuring themes of displacement and war, which are two subjects Carsen feels are relatable to society today with the current refugee crisis in the Mediterranean basin.

On February 19, 21, 23, 25, 27 & March 1, Ivor Bolton conducts the Chorus and Orchestra of the Teatro Real, with a roster of artists including David Portillo as Idamante, Anett Fritsch as Ilia, Eleonora Buratto as Elettra, Benjamin Hulett as Arbace, Oliver Johnston as the High Priest of Neptune, and Alexander Tsymbalyuk as the voice of Neptune.
