‘Roméo et Juliette’ at Lyric Opera of Chicago
February 27, 2016
Eric Cutler makes his highly anticipated return to the Lyric Opera of Chicago this season, as Roméo in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. Performances take place March 11, 16 & 19 and feature Susanna Phillips as Juliette, Joshua Hopkins as Mercutio, Christian Van Horn as Friar Laurence, and Marianne Crebassa sings Stephano. Acclaimed conductor Emmanuel Villaume leads the Lyric Opera Orchestra for this Bartlett Sher-directed staging.
Mr. Cutler’s previous performances in the role have been heralded by audiences and critics alike:
“Cutler … acts with a fresh, slightly surprised demeanour as though he just happened to be standing on the place beneath when his voice dropped from heaven. It is a voice of natural resonance and lyric smoothness with power in reserve and never a hint of stentorian bludgeoning, whether in a knife fight, flagrante delicto or proximate rigor mortis.” (The Sydney Morning Herald)
“Eric Cutler is a fully-convincing Roméo, with passionate phrasing …”

“Cutler too has vocal power and presence.” (Star Observer)
